Is an MRI during pregnancy safe?

MRI is considered a safe imaging modality during pregnancy. Unlike X-ray or CT scans, it does not use X-rays, but electromagnetic radiation. It is harmless to both the developing fetus and the pregnant woman. Experts recommend waiting until the 2nd for scheduled examinations. trimester, because at the beginning of pregnancy, during organogenesis, it is better to minimize the number of any interventions. Of course, when there is an urgent need, MRI can be performed in all trimesters of pregnancy.

When to get an MRI during pregnancy?

MRI in pregnancy is performed in various cases. Head MRIs are ordered for patients with severe headaches, dizziness, vomiting or visual disturbances. Its main goal is to rule out ischemic stroke, which can be a complication that occurs during pregnancy. MRI is also performed if the result of an abdominal ultrasound is inconclusive. If the mother-to-be presents with symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, vomiting, peritoneal symptoms, and the ultrasound result does not give a clear answer regarding the diagnosis, an abdominal MRI may be performed. However, it should be remembered that the test of choice in the first instance remains ultrasonography.

Fetal MRI – what is the test?

Not everyone is aware that it is now possible to perform an MRI on a baby while it is still pregnant. They are ordered in special cases when the doctor suspects anatomical defects in the fetus. It is more accurate than an ultrasound and can help plan further management such as possible intrauterine interventions, the route of delivery or treatment after the baby is born. However, it is an extremely difficult test to interpret, so it should be performed only in specific cases and described by experienced radiologists who specialize in fetal MRI.
