Pregnancy time is a period when many different kinds of ailments can occur. In some pregnant women they make daily functioning miserable, while in others they are practically non-existent. One of the symptoms that many moms-to-be complain about is uncomfortable calf cramps during pregnancy. For what reason do they appear and how to deal with them?

Calf cramps in pregnancy- causes

Calf cramps during pregnancy can have various causes. In some women, they are associated with electrolyte deficiencies, such as magnesium. The time of pregnancy is also the time when the enlarging uterine cavity, along with the baby, can put pressure on the venous vessels, impeding blood flow. In addition, the unphysiological curvature of the spine present in many moms-to-be especially in advanced pregnancy can lead to nerve compression and the onset of extremely painful calf cramps.  Women struggling with overweight or obesity are also more likely to complain of cramps.

Calf cramps in pregnancy- management

The short-term management of severe calf cramps is to massage the painful area and stretch the muscles. A warm compress can also be applied. It is worthwhile, once the pain has passed, to get up and walk around for a while. For recurring calf cramps, visits to a swimming pool or physiotherapist’s office can help.

If, on the other hand, the pain is severe and does not pass, keep in mind that it may not be related to a spasm in the calf muscles, but caused by a thrombosis. Pregnancy time is a period of increased risk of venous thromboembolism. In such a situation, it is essential to visit the hospital and perform diagnostics for thrombosis and implement possible treatment.

Prevent calf cramps during pregnancy

To prevent the appearance of unpleasant calf cramps during pregnancy, it is definitely worth taking care of a healthy and balanced diet and proper hydration of the body. Specialists recommend eating, among other things: tomatoes, legumes, nuts or bran. Some mothers-to-be are keen on over-the-counter dietary supplements, but these should not be used without consulting a health care provider.

Calf cramps can also be prevented by engaging in regular physical activity. Staying in one position for too long, especially sitting with one leg over the other, predisposes to unpleasant ailments. It’s also a good idea to do exercises designed for pregnant women on your own, or sign up for group classes for moms-to-be. Thus, under the guidance of a specialist, you can practice physical activity that is safe for the child’s development.

A pregnant woman should also remember to wear comfortable, non-pressing clothing and shoes. Sleeping position is also of no small importance. Physiotherapists recommend that moms-to-be use a pillow under their legs while sleeping and lie on their side.
