Adequate hydration of the body is extremely important, especially during pregnancy. However, it is worth knowing which water pregnant women should drink. Is carbonated water advisable during pregnancy?

Water requirements during pregnancy

According to the recommendations of the Institute of Nutrition, a pregnant woman should take in a total of about 2-2.5 liters of fluids a day, including about 1.5 liters of water. The remaining amount should be supplemented by consuming, among other things. teas or vegetable and fruit juices, preferably without added sugar, and by eating soups or drinking milk.

The demand for water during pregnancy is related to, among other things. With the physiological increase in circulating blood volume, as well as the development of the child’s tissues. It can vary depending on the temperature, physical activity or weight of the woman and the humidity in the apartment. It is also worth noting that amniotic fluid consists of as much as 98% water.

Benefits of drinking water during pregnancy

In addition to keeping the body properly hydrated, drinking water during pregnancy can reduce various ailments such as:

  • nausea,
  • vomiting,
  • heartburn,
  • constipation.

Consumption of water is very important in cases of increased vomiting to prevent dehydration. Drinking water during pregnancy can also reduce the risk of urinary tract inflammation and the development of urinary tract stones.

The best water for pregnant women

Pregnant women are recommended to drink non-carbonated spring or low-sodium mineral water. This is because a large amount of sodium can contribute to the development of edema. Water during pregnancy should be low or medium mineralized, that is, contain no more than 500 mg of minerals per liter.

There are also no medical contraindications to drinking sparkling water during pregnancy. However, some women notice an increase in bloating after drinking sparkling water. On the other hand, it helps some moms-to-be with nausea.

It is important for a pregnant woman to drink water regularly throughout the day in smaller amounts. The water bottle, on the other hand, should not be opened for more than 24 hours.

Tap water during pregnancy

During pregnancy, one should be especially careful of possible infections. Therefore, pregnant women are advised against eating raw meat, fish, and are advised to handle such products with care. Vegetables and fruits should always be washed before consumption. This is because, unwashed, they can be a source of toxoplasmosis or listeriosis, which is dangerous to a woman during pregnancy. When it comes to tap water a lot depends on the city where the woman lives. In some of them, tap water is not suitable for drinking at all, even less so for pregnant women. It is also important to remember that tap water often contains substances that are less or absent in bottled water, such as heavy metals. It is also not rich in the right minerals recommended for pregnant women. To be able to control the composition of the water, it is best to drink bottled water, and if from the tap then filtered beforehand.
