Sinusitis can effectively make life miserable for pregnant women. Its unpleasant symptoms in many mothers-to-be persist for a long time or recur. Find out what the symptoms of inflammation are and how sinusitis can be treated during pregnancy.

Sinuses in pregnancy- symptoms of inflammation

The immune system of pregnant women is physiologically weakened. For this reason, many moms-to-be complain of more frequent respiratory infections. One of them is sinusitis. This infection is very troublesome and manifests itself as a headache, a blocked nose or, on the contrary, a watery discharge that can cause hoarseness or a cough. Many people also complain of feeling sore in the face, as well as taste and smell disorders.

Sinuses during pregnancy- how to treat?

In most cases, sinusitis in pregnancy is caused by viruses, among others. rhinoviruses or influenza and paragrpa viruses. Bacterial infections, on the other hand, are the result of superinfection of a previous infection. It is therefore very important to choose the right treatment for the pathogen causing the symptoms. It is rarely necessary to reach for antibiotics. In the vast majority of cases, management is symptomatic. It involves the use of medications to thin secretions, such as sea salt or mucolytic drugs, as well as painkillers and inhalation. Paracetamol will be safe during pregnancy, but always consult a specialist before reaching for a drug or dietary supplement.

In preventing the onset of sinusitis, proper humidification of the air in the home, ventilating the rooms and avoiding contact with sick people, especially children, play an important role. Besides, you can support yourself with natural methods such as garlic and lemon. For most infections, attention is paid to adequate hydration of the body of the mother-to-be.

Sinuses in pregnancy- complications

If the symptoms of sinusitis in pregnancy persist despite symptomatic treatment or the fever exceeds 38 degrees, it may be that a bacterial superinfection has occurred. In such a situation, it is necessary to use antibiotic therapy – such as the implementation of amoxicillin. Complications of sinusitis in the form of orbital inflammation, for example, are extremely rare. During pregnancy, and especially at the beginning of pregnancy, it is very important to avoid high body temperature, and if a fever develops in the course of sinusitis, beat it with paracetamol.
