Contractions in pregnancy do not appear only at the time of delivery. In many moms-to-be they occur much earlier. It is useful to know the differences between predictive and labor contractions. When should you go to the hospital?

Cramps in pregnancy-when do they occur?

Contrary to appearances, contractions in pregnancy occur much earlier than the birth itself. In some women they occur as early as 20. One week of pregnancy. These are usually Alvarez and Braxton Hicks contractions. They occur about 1-2 times an hour  and manifest themselves as hardening of the abdomen.

Premonitory contractions

Premonitory contractions usually occur around 37-38. One week of pregnancy. They are designed to prepare the uterus for proper labor contractions. In some women, their intensity is so great that they mistake them for the very contractions that signal impending labor. If contractions occur earlier, it is always a good idea to go to the emergency room to rule out a possible incipient preterm labor.

Differences between labor contractions and predictive contractions

Labor contractions are different from the predictive ones. One of the main differences is that the predictive ones pass after time, after a warm bath or after taking diastolic medication. The labor contractions cannot be stopped on their own. This is only possible with the help of the so-called. tocolysis used, among other things. for transporting the parturient to a higher referral center or administering steroids to accelerate the baby’s lung development. In addition, labor contractions increase in strength as they continue.

Cramps in pregnancy-when to the hospital?

There is no reason to go to the hospital immediately when labor contractions begin. However, if the mother-to-be feels safer under the care of doctors and midwives, she can go to the emergency room at the onset of contraction activity. It is also worth going for a check-up if the contractions are regular and occur before 37. A week or earlier. It is always necessary to visit the emergency room for any reproductive tract bleeding. Likewise, if there is outflow of amniotic fluid in addition to contraction activity. If the pregnancy is physiological and the mother-to-be does not want to go to the hospital at the very beginning of labor, it is recommended that she go to the delivery room when contractions occur regularly every 7-10 minutes or so. It’s also important to remember that each subsequent birth can go faster, so multiparous women should go to the hospital earlier than women giving birth for the first time.
