Mild cheeses, due to their flavor, have many supporters. They are part of many dishes, as well as a stand-alone meal. Pregnant women, however, should be cautious about using moldy cheeses. Why?

Mild cheeses during pregnancy-are they safe

A pregnant woman should pay special attention to the products she consumes. Among the list of things “forbidden” during pregnancy are. molded and unpasteurized cheeses. As with other products belonging to the dairy category, the lack of pasteurization can lead to the development of the dangerous bacteria that is Listeria monocytogenes. For this reason, it is not recommended for moms-to-be to consume, among other things. unpasteurized molded cheeses. Pasteurized molded cheeses, on the other hand, are considered relatively safe during pregnancy due to their heat treatment. To avoid accidental contagion, when a mother-to-be is craving blue cheese, it’s a good idea to go for products packaged originally and described as pasteurized. Indeed, the greatest danger of listeriosis is found in the so-called “listeriosis” cheeses. natural, from home farms, where we are not always sure if the pasteurization was done properly. In addition, large plants and dairy companies have procedures in place to rule out the possible presence of Listeria in products.

Mild cheeses during pregnancy- risk to the baby

Listeriosis is a foodborne bacterial disease. Most often, infection occurs from the consumption of products containing Listeria bacilli- among others. raw meat, unpasteurized cheese or seafood. Ice cream sold in booths that do not meet Sanitary Inspectorate requirements can also be a source of infection.

The symptoms of listeriosis are mainly gastrointestinal symptoms. While for the pregnant woman the disease is mostly not dangerous, for the baby, eating unpasteurized blue cheese by the mother-to-be can lead to serious consequences. Among those mentioned are. congenital infection leading to sepsis, and in the worst case scenario, the death of the child can occur. Treatment for confirmed listeriosis is based on the implementation of appropriate antibiotic therapy.

Food products banned during pregnancy

In addition to products derived from unpasteurized milk, the following should not be consumed during pregnancy: raw meat, fish, seafood and raw eggs. All kinds of stimulants including alcohol, even in the smallest quantities, are banned. The mother-to-be should also avoid smoked fish.
