A surgical delivery is a natural childbirth during which the use of a vacuum or obstetric forceps is necessary to deliver the baby safely. To use them, specific indications are necessary. Surgical delivery carries risks, but in this case, the safe birth of the baby is more important.

Nowadays, the frequency of surgical deliveries has decreased in favor of more frequent cesarean sections. Nevertheless, in some situations, a surgical delivery is still necessary. It occurs most often in a situation where II. the period of labor is prolonged and the assistance of medical personnel is needed to deliver the baby. If in KTG records symptoms are present that indicate the risk of perinatal hypoxia, doctors choose a surgical delivery. It is also a solution for women who have lost strength during ongoing labor and are too exhausted to push properly and deliver the baby safely. Like most medical procedures, however, a surgical delivery can also involve complications for both mother and baby.

Surgical delivery- forceps

Obstetric forceps is a device used to embrace the head of a child in labor. Their shape is adapted to the structure of the birth canal, as well as the head of the newborn. In order for their use to be possible, it is necessary to exclude the so-called “”new”. maternal-fetal incommensurability, and the cervical outlet must be fully dilated. Besides, forceps are used after the fetal bladder has been ruptured or punctured. Indications for the use of obstetric forceps are in addition to prolonged II. period of labor, fetal distress, maternal heart disease and physical exhaustion.

Surgical delivery- vacuum aspiration

The vacuum consists of a suction cup that is placed near the posterior fontanel on the baby’s head and pulled by the doctor in the appropriate traction. The suction cup is created from rubber or silicone to minimize the risk of injury to the child.

Indications for the use of a vacuum include. The risk of retinal separation in the woman, shock, hypertension or heart and respiratory diseases in the mother. In addition, doctors are more likely to use a vacuum when delivering the second of twins.

Absolute contraindications to the use of a vacuum extractor are:

  • birth disproportionality,
  • preserved fetal bladder,
  • lack of complete dilation,
  • facial positioning,
  • Pelvic or transverse position.

Surgical delivery- complications

As the name implies, forceps and vacuum aspiration delivery is a surgical delivery, which can have consequences including. injuries. It is believed that the use of forceps is safer for the baby and a vacuum for the mother. During operative deliveries, injuries to the vagina, cervix and perineum of the woman can occur. A vacuum, on the other hand, can lead to injuries to the baby’s head. Hematomas, intracranial bleeding or hemorrhagic petechiae on the child’s retina can occur after using a vacuum extractor.
