Many women during pregnancy consider whether paying for a private midwife to deliver their babies is the right move. This decision should be made individually by the mother-to-be. What are the advantages of opting for a private midwife during childbirth and what to look for when choosing one

Private midwife – why is it worth it?

At the outset, it is worth noting that not every hospital allows a midwife who is not part of the team of a particular labor ward, especially in times of ongoing pandemonium. For this reason, before making a decision, the mother-to-be should make sure that the hospitals she is considering for her delivery have no objection to the presence of a private midwife. You should also remember to apply early enough to the midwife of your choice if you wish to purchase such a service, as in some cases the queue and list of applicants is very long.

If the hospital agrees to such a person, it is worth considering the pros of such a decision. First of all, a private midwife is someone the parents-to-be can get to know beforehand, not someone they will see for the first time in the delivery room. Paying your own midwife is also a guarantee that she will devote practically 100% of her time, as she will not be attending to other patients during labor. What’s more, she often stays by the woman and child’s side even in the postpartum period and provides useful information, for example, related to breastfeeding. For many parturients, a stressful moment is also the “rotation” of midwives in the ward due to the end of their working hours. With a private midwife, this problem disappears. In addition, it also gives you the opportunity to meet in advance and create a plan for the course of labor.

On the other hand, it is important to realize that paying for a private midwife is a considerable expense, so not every woman can afford this kind of help. However, this does not mean that childbirth will be more difficult if one does not buy a private midwife. Midwives working in hospitals are professionals who, in the vast majority of cases, will properly take care of a woman’s comfort during labor.

Private midwife – who to choose?

When choosing a private midwife for childbirth, it is a good idea to ask the opinion of friends who have given birth and to meet with several recommended midwives. This allows you to discern potential cooperation. It is very important that during childbirth it should proceed without major disruptions. One of the key issues in choosing a midwife is also whether a woman will be able to trust and entrust her with such a responsible task as helping her baby come into the world.

Information on private midwives is best gleaned from female colleagues, who are sure to advise you of several potential ones. Moreover, many hospitals offer access to private midwives who work at a particular facility. A very good source of information on available private midwives is also the Internet and all kinds of groups and forums for pregnant women.

Private midwife – what to look for?

Before choosing your midwife, it is worth finding out, among other things. about her responsibilities, experience, as well as her personal preferences for conducting childbirth. It is very important that it has similar views to those of the Parents on these issues. This will certainly have a positive effect on later cooperation and may (although not always) result in a somewhat easier delivery. It is also worth inquiring about financial issues, as some services of a midwife are charged extra.
