The first sign of a properly localized pregnancy is the imaging of a pregnancy follicle in the uterine cavity during an ultrasound. However, a pregnancy follicle alone does not necessarily equate to a well-developing pregnancy. What is the symptom of an empty pregnancy follicle?
Pregnancy follicle-what is it?
The gestational sac (GS- gestational follicle) is a small circular fluid structure, which is the first stage of early pregnancy, by which it is possible to check whether the pregnancy is located correctly, before the embryo is visualized with heart activity. This is because after the gestational follicle, the yolk follicle, the embryo and the amniotic sac develop sequentially.
Pregnancy follicle- ultrasound
The majority of women report at 1. An ultrasound after receiving a positive urine or blood pregnancy test. It is mostly 5-7. One week of pregnancy. A pregnancy follicle should be visible in the test if the concentration of beta- HCG in the blood is about 1500 IU/ml. The gynecologist then assesses the presence of a follicle in the uterine cavity, as well as measuring it and checking how many pregnancy follicles there are. If the concentration of beta- HCG is high, and the pregnancy follicle cannot be localized in the uterine cavity, there is a high risk of ectopic (ectopic) pregnancy.
The size of the pregnancy follicle
By the size of the gestational follicle on ultrasound, it is possible to judge which week of pregnancy a woman is in before the baby’s parietal-peripheral length (CRL) can be measured. If:
- Pregnancy follicle is 1-4 mm in size = 4/5 weeks of pregnancy
- Pregnancy follicle is 5-8 mm in size = 5/6 weeks pregnant
It is considered that the normal daily follicle growth is 1-1.2 mm. If the gestational follicle is over 20 mm and there is no embryo inside, there is a very high risk of miscarriage (known as an empty fetal egg).
Empty pregnancy follicle
If an empty gestational follicle is visible on ultrasound, it means that an embryo-free pregnancy has occurred. In its course, normal development of the yolk follicle and amniotic membrane takes place, but without an embryo, which does not form at all or is absorbed at an early stage of development. An empty fetal egg is a situation synonymous with miscarriage. Among its causes, genetic abnormalities are most often cited. It can also be related to immune disorders or infection. Importantly, an empty pregnancy follicle does not increase the risk of miscarriage in subsequent pregnancies.
