Many women in the midst of pregnancy certainly wonder how restrictive they should be about their diet during this time. One topic worth discussing is the consumption of mushrooms by mothers-to-be, which are popular especially in autumn and during the holiday season. What are their health benefits and which ones are safe for the pregnant woman?

Mushrooms in pregnancy-benefits for health

Contrary to popular belief, mushrooms are a source of many valuable vitamins and minerals. Nutritionists who deal with the issue of nutrition on a daily basis emphasize that in cap mushrooms can be found, among other things. A set of B vitamins, vitamin C, as well as micronutrients such as zinc, copper, magnesium and selenium. What’s more, they also contain large amounts of antioxidants, or antioxidants, which prevent the body from aging or cancer to some extent. Accordingly, in some areas of Japan, preparations are being made from the polysaccharides in the mushrooms to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy and thereby strengthen the immune system. Mushrooms also have an anti-atherosclerotic effect, which is also related to the presence of the previously mentioned antioxidants. Interestingly, oyster mushrooms, for example, also contain certain amounts of substances that reduce blood lipid levels. Mushrooms, therefore, are not only tasty, but also a rich source of micro- and macronutrients. Consuming certain species of them during pregnancy can help pregnant women with problems such as excessively high blood cholesterol, avitaminosis or anemia. However, it should be remembered that in some cases supplementation with iron preparations, for example, is necessary, and that a pregnant woman should not treat on her own without consulting a specialist.

Mushrooms in pregnancy-which ones are safe for the mother-to-be?

Mushrooms in general do not pose a particular threat to the mother-to-be, if, of course, they are non-poisonous species and collected by an experienced mushroom picker or bought from a reliable source. It’s no secret that many mushrooms should not be eaten under any circumstances regardless of being pregnant. However, the selection of the right kinds that are safe for a pregnant woman does not have to be much more restrictive than it is for other people. The mother-to-be can eat all those mushrooms that are not poisonous to humans. However, it is worth paying particularly close attention at this time to hygienic considerations and how they will be cooked. Note that eating raw or unwashed mushrooms is categorically forbidden in any case.

Mushrooms during pregnancy-what form do you eat them in?

Pregnancy is a time when a woman’s digestive system, as well as her senses, react in a slightly different way than before. Any kind of taste or smell sensation is often amplified, and previous foods that tasted good to a woman can cause unpleasant sensations. For this reason, previous ways of cooking mushrooms may not be advisable for a pregnant woman. Food should also not be heavily spiced or too spicy, so as not to cause unpleasant nausea, vomiting or, often occurring in mothers-to-be, heartburn. Moreover, to ensure that mushrooms have as many beneficial nutrients as possible, it is advisable to consume them in the form of sauces and soups. Frying them, on the other hand, is not recommended due to the loss of many nutrients throughout the preparation process, as well as the formation of harmful compounds when oil or butter is heated in the pan.
