Magnesium is one of the most important elements for the human body. This substance participates in the processes taking place inside the cells, the synthesis of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. It is very important for the nervous system. It ensures that nerve impulses are transmitted properly and electrolyte balance is maintained at an optimal level. It is also important for DNA. Magnesium in pregnancy has a major impact on the development of the baby.

Can magnesium be used during pregnancy?

Magnesium can be taken during pregnancy. Additional supplementation is advisable to avoid dangerous deficiencies. The mother-to-be should realize that the demand for all nutrients, vitamins and minerals increases during pregnancy. This is due to the fact that some of them are used by the child. Magnesium in pregnancy should be supplied primarily with food. However, for a number of reasons, food is often not a sufficient source, so a pregnant woman can use additional preparations that contain this element.

What are the symptoms of magnesium deficiency in pregnancy?

Lack of sufficient magnesium during pregnancy causes the body to stop functioning well, and the baby does not develop properly. Deficiency increases the risk of reproductive tract bleeding and, in extreme cases, even miscarriage or premature birth. In addition, it can affect the formation of the baby’s nervous and skeletal systems, as well as its birth weight.

Magnesium deficiency in pregnancy can be suspected when the following symptoms appear:

  • concentration and memory disorders,
  • mood disorders,
  • Deterioration of the condition of hair and nails,
  • muscle tremors,
  • Tingling and other unpleasant sensations in the legs,
  • pregnancy headaches,
  • sleep disorders,
  • abnormal heart function.

Magnesium deficiency in pregnancy can be confirmed by laboratory tests. They require a small blood sample. The referral is made by a general practitioner or gynecologist.

Magnesium requirements during pregnancy

Magnesium requirements during pregnancy are higher than for women who are not expecting a baby. It amounts to 360 mg per day (data from the Institute of Food and Nutrition). Supplementation should also be continued after childbirth. The body of moms who breastfeed needs 320 mg of magnesium per day.

What magnesium to use during pregnancy is important. It is worth choosing good quality preparations. There should be no preservatives or fillers in their composition. It is assumed that the shorter the composition, the better. Dosage is also important. 2-3 capsules a day should cover the body’s needs. Magnesium for pregnant women is often one of the ingredients of combination preparations (e.g., also containing folic acid or other vitamins and minerals). This allows the mother-to-be to reduce the number of pills used.

How to use magnesium during pregnancy?

Magnesium in pregnancy must be used according to the recommendations of the drug manufacturer and your doctor. It is necessary to read the leaflet before use. Do not take the product if there are contraindications to it.

Natural sources of magnesium

The mother-to-be should also include in her diet products that are a valuable source of magnesium. It is good to consume more:

  • Nuts and seeds (such as pumpkin seeds),
  • almonds,
  • legumes,
  • avocado,
  • brown rice,
  • bananas,
  • Leafy vegetables (arugula, kale, botanicals, spinach),
  • sprouts,
  • whole grain products,
  • groats (such as buckwheat).

Do not forget to properly hydrate your body (at least 2.5 liters of water per day). It is good to choose mineral water with a high magnesium content.
