Many moms-to-be wonder if they can drink non-alcoholic beer. It has been known for years that there is no safe limit when it comes to alcohol consumption during pregnancy, and even the smallest amount can cause irreversible changes in the unborn child. What happens if a woman reaches for a 0% beer? Also, can it cause negative consequences for a toddler's development?

Is it okay to drink non-alcoholic beer while pregnant?

Before a mother-to-be reaches for a beer labeled as non-alcoholic, she must remember that not every drink does not contain alcohol. According to Polish law, non-alcoholic beer in Poland is considered beer in which the alcohol content does not exceed 0.5% of the total volume. What does this mean? Not every non-alcoholic beer is actually a 0% beer. It should be considered a low-alcohol beer. The addition of alcohol is advisable so that the drink retains its characteristic flavor. Meanwhile, the toddler’s body is just developing and has no defense mechanisms against harmful substances. Even the smallest dose of alcohol can produce a poison-like effect. It is also worth mentioning that the mother-to-be should be careful with other drinks as well. Minimum alcohol content is also found in popular sub-beers or non-alcoholic wine.

  Which non-alcoholic beer for pregnant women?

However, there are more and more beer substitutes on the market that do not contain alcohol, but have a similar taste. However, the alcohol content is clearly marked on the label as 0%. Both pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers can reach for these types of drinks. As with other products in your diet, it’s a good idea to choose those that don’t contain sugar, flavored syrups or glucose-fructose syrup. It is a good habit to check labels. The shorter the formulation, the better the quality of the product. Consumption of sweetened beverages not only promotes loss of weight control, but can also backfire.



The mother-to-be should take care of a balanced diet

and control body weight. The proverbial eating for two is not a good habit. In order to effectively quench your thirst, it is worth choosing those drinks that contain essential micro- and macronutrients, electrolytes, but also polyphenols that reduce inflammation. Of course, the best choice is water. In summer, you can add ice cubes, fresh lemon juice, and mint leaves. Note that the recommended daily intake is a minimum of 2 liters of water per day. If the mother-to-be is bothered by indigestion or stomach problems, herbal teas dedicated to pregnant women that can be purchased at the pharmacy without a prescription are also effective. Contraindication to their consumption is hypersensitivity to any component of the infusion. 0% beer during pregnancy can also be included in the diet, provided that it does not actually contain any alcohol.

Every mother-to-be must know that there is no minimum safe dose of alcohol. Even non-alcoholic (or rather low-alcohol) beer during pregnancy can cause miscarriage or

premature birth

. The child’s body is completely defenseless, and the toxin that is alcohol can lead to irreversible brain damage. The consequences of consuming alcoholic beverages can be, for example. ADHD. In medical terminology, FAS, or Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, is also distinguished.

Children of mothers who did not shun alcohol during pregnancy tend to have much lower birth weights and develop more slowly than their peers. Postpartum growth deficit and smaller head circumference are characteristic. As they grow up, their distinctive facial features become more prominent, including. small eyes, but also limb and joint deformities. They are often diagnosed with vision and hearing problems, which the toddler will continue to face throughout his life. Children with FAS tend to have problems controlling their emotions (they often become enraged and hyperactive), find it harder to adapt in a new environment and find their way around their peers. Therefore, during adolescence, they are much more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and often act on impulse. Unfortunately, FAS is incurable, so it’s a good idea to think about the consequences before the mom-to-be reaches for alcohol, but also for non-alcoholic beer, which actually contains a low dose of alcohol. If we are not sure whether the chosen beverage definitely does not contain any undesirable substance, it is best to refrain from consuming it.
