Aesthetic medicine treatments are gaining popularity in Poland. One of the procedures performed is the injection of hyaluronic acid subcutaneously. However, can this procedure also be safely performed during pregnancy?

What is the function of hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that is found in the intercellular matrix of the dermis. Due to its chemical properties, it is able to bind up to 250 water molecules. Thus, it provides the skin with adequate elasticity and firmness. In young people, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the dermis is high, giving it its characteristic smoothness. However, as we age, its content decreases and the amount of bound water decreases, resulting in the appearance of wrinkles and a decrease in skin firmness.

However, hyaluronic acid is not only about healthy looking skin. The compound is also found in joint synovium. It influences its proper viscosity, and is also involved in nourishing cartilage, properly lubricating the joint surface, and distributing nutrients within it. Hyaluronic acid also protects joint surfaces from excessive friction and mechanical trauma.  In the case of aesthetic medicine, the compound is primarily used in injectable treatments such as microdermabrasion or lip augmentation. It is also an ingredient in many creams for use on the skin.

Hyaluronic acid  during pregnancy – is it safe?

Pregnancy is a special period during which a significant number of chemicals and medicinal products are contraindicated for use. To some extent, this also applies to hyaluronic acid. During pregnancy, injectable treatments of any kind are contraindicated. This means that pregnant women must forgo treatments such as microdermabrasion or hyaluronic acid lip fillers for the duration of these nine months. However, this does not mean that the use of this substance is absolutely prohibited during pregnancy. Women in it can use topical preparations in the form of serums, lotions or creams containing hyaluronic acid in their composition without any worries. The only contraindication to their use is a possible hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the product. In addition, the use of cosmetics containing hyaluronic acid in their composition can bring tangible benefits such as intensive hydration of the skin, soothing possible irritation, reducing the formation of hyperpigmentation or strengthening the natural protective barrier of the skin. However, it is worth remembering that each pregnancy is unique, so before using any new cosmetic, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist to dispel any doubts.
