Ginger, due to its numerous properties , is used when trying to deal with many ailments at home. For this reason, its distinctive taste and smell is familiar to virtually everyone.  However, can pregnant women safely reach for ginger? What are its properties?

Properties of ginger

Many people reach for ginger because of its widely known properties. The gingerol contained in it has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. In addition, antioxidants that inhibit aging and the formation of free radicals are present in ginger. They, in turn, are responsible for, among other things. for cancer processes and the development of atherosclerosis. In addition, ginger in its composition contains a long list of vitamins and micro- and macronutrients that have positive effects on health, for example. Iron, vitamin C or potassium. Ginger is also believed to have a diaphoretic and expectorant effect, hence its important role in home remedies for dealing with the common cold.

What is ginger good for in pregnancy?

In addition to its flavor, used mainly in Eastern cuisine, ginger has numerous health properties. Indeed, the use of ginger can alleviate various types of discomfort in all trimesters of pregnancy. At its beginning, pregnant women most often turn to ginger mainly because it relieves nausea and vomiting that occur during this period. Throughout pregnancy, it also provides a home remedy for fighting cold symptoms. It not only reduces inflammation, but also relieves coughing. It also aids digestion, thus reducing the discomfort of constipation and bloating. Interestingly, ginger also has anticoagulant effects, which may reduce the risk of thromboembolic disease during pregnancy.

Ginger  during pregnancy-is it safe?

There are no data showing the danger of consuming ginger during pregnancy and its possible effects on the developing baby. It also does not affect the risk of birth defects in children, nor does it increase the risk of miscarriage. So it can be considered a relatively safe product for pregnant women. Nevertheless, doctors point out that ginger has an intense, pungent taste. It can not only irritate the gastric mucosa and cause pain, but also aggravate heartburn in the mother-to-be. So it’s best that when a pregnant woman reaches for ginger, she does so in moderation.

Ginger in pregnancy- how to prepare an infusion?

Ginger is sold in raw, dried and pickled forms. To prepare an infusion of ginger, which is particularly useful in relieving nausea that occurs during the first trimester, use dried or fresh ginger. It should be soaked and then poured with more water. Because of the distinct flavor, it is best for the mother-to-be to judge for herself how much she wants to dilute the brew.
