In the public's mind, a common term associated with multiple pregnancies is monozygotic and dizygotic twins. In medical terminology, these terms are rather rarely used. Nevertheless, it is worth knowing what biparental twins are and what such a pregnancy looks like.

Biparental twins- how are they formed?

Bi-zygotic (dizygotic) twins, as the name suggests, are formed from two different egg cells fertilized by two different sperm. This is most often associated with the presence of two egg cells released during a single ovulation. In very rare cases, the sperm comes from two men. The resulting zygotes later develop independently, in two amniotic sacs. Virtually all dizygotic twins also have their own placenta-they are twin pregnancies (with a few exceptions). Multiple pregnancies, even twin pregnancies, are always considered high-risk and require more frequent visits to the gynecologist.

Biparental twins – sex

Biparental twins, unlike monozygotic twins, can have different sexes. This is due to the fact that two egg cells are fertilized by separate sperm, and further cell divisions occur independently of each other. Biparental twins can therefore be two girls, two boys or a boy and a girl. The chance for each of these deals is the same. These children, unlike monozygotic twins, also differ in appearance. They resemble each other as siblings, however, they are not identical.

Biparental twins- complications of pregnancy

Twin pregnancies are associated with a higher risk of complications. Among them, the most commonly mentioned are:

  • Preterm birth
  • Limitation of growth
  • Polio
  • Hypertension
  • Unrestrained vomiting in a pregnant woman

In a bicornuate pregnancy, it is recommended to repeat ultrasound examinations every 4 weeks from 20. One week of pregnancy. This allows better monitoring of fetal growth.

Biparental twins- childbirth

In the case of multiple pregnancies, delivery is often earlier than 40. week. For bicornuate twin pregnancies, it is usually 37-39. One week of pregnancy. A longer duration of pregnancy could lead to serious complications such as the death of one or both fetuses. Natural childbirth is possible in bisexual pregnancies if the first twin has a head position. It is also important that there is not too much mass disproportion between children (<20%). The decision on the timing and route of delivery depends on the obstetric situation and the presence of possible complications, as well as the welfare of the babies.
