Animals are present in numerous homes, and many people cannot imagine functioning without them. However, it is useful to know which animals may pose some risk to the pregnant woman, and which are perfectly safe. Is a newborn and an animal in the house a good combination?
Cat in the house during pregnancy
The most controversial issue for domestic pets and pregnant women is cats, and more specifically, the risk of tocoplasmosis associated with this animal. However, this has been a repeated myth for many years. Toxoplasmosis infection occurs through contact with cat feces or contaminated raw vegetables or fruits. For this reason, moms-to-be are advised to always wash raw fruits and vegetables thoroughly, not to use the same cutting board for meat and vegetables, and to clean the cat’s litter box with gloves. They can also transfer this duty to other household members for the period of these nine months. Toxoplasmosis in pregnancy, especially if contracted in the first trimester, risks complications in the child that can lead to mental disability, visual impairment or hearing loss.
Pregnancy and pets at home
While you’re waiting for your baby to be born, it’s a good idea to give your pet a thorough veterinary check, including checking for up-to-date rabies vaccinations. Parents-to-be should also familiarize the pet with the newborn by inviting friends who have children into the home. If a dog or cat sleeps in a bed with household members, it should be taught to sleep separately, in case it does not accept the baby and has to sleep outside the bed. Many people make it a practice to bring the newborn’s clothes home after birth so that the animal becomes familiar with the baby’s scent and the baby is not a stranger to them when they come home from the hospital.
Animals at home vs. a newborn baby
Pediatricians point out the advantages of having pets. It is believed that children who grow up with dogs are less likely to be allergic and less likely to struggle with bronchial asthma. Their resistance to various types of microorganisms is also greater. No less important is the impact of animals on a child’s intellectual and mental development. From the first days, the child’s bond with the animal is built. There is also a perception that children who have pets at home are more responsible and sensitive. However, beware of breeds especially dogs that are aggressive or react badly to children. They can behave particularly threateningly when there is a new householder in the house and they are not prepared or accustomed to it.
