During pregnancy, it is very important to regularly check blood pressure values. It avoids serious complications usually associated with too high pressure. What are the blood pressure norms for a pregnant woman? What are the risks of abnormal blood pressure during pregnancy?

Blood pressure in pregnancy-norms

During a physiological pregnancy, blood pressure decreases by about 10 mmHg. The lowest pressure is found around 24. One week of pregnancy. This reduction is due to a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance.

Blood pressure during pregnancy should be lower than 140/90mmHg. Values of 130-139/85-89 mmHg are considered high normal blood pressure in pregnant women. Pressure is most often considered to be too low when values fall below 100/60 mmHg.

Blood pressure in pregnancy- too low

Low blood pressure in pregnancy, unlike hypertension, is not associated with serious complications in most cases. It may not cause any symptoms. Often, however, low blood pressure in pregnancy manifests itself in a worse mood, headaches, weakness or a feeling of palpitations. It can also be associated with fainting. To take care of normal blood pressure values, remember to stay hydrated and get adequate amounts of sleep and physical activity.

In addition, it is also useful to know that the lowest pressure is observed in the left lying position. Many women also develop hypotensive syndrome while lying on their backs during pregnancy. This can lead to cardiac dysfunction in the fetus, so it is better to choose a different position.

Proper treatment of excessively high blood pressure during pregnancy is very important. It is important to remember that not all hypertension medications are safe during pregnancy. The drug of first choice in this situation is methyldopa. In addition, it is very important to have a healthy lifestyle and regularly check blood pressure values so that if your blood pressure is too high, you can react as soon as possible and go to the hospital.

Why is abnormal blood pressure in pregnancy dangerous?

Low blood pressure in most cases does not carry serious consequences. It should be remembered, however, that the so-called “”new” and “old”. Hypotension can result in fainting and thus be associated with risk of injury.

Excessively high blood pressure during pregnancy can lead to serious complications. The mother may develop premature separation of the placenta, DIC or renal failure. One of the most dangerous complications that can occur is preeclampsia and eclampsia. In addition, the risk of preterm labor, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), and fetal death is higher in hypertension.
