One of the important parameters monitored throughout pregnancy is the platelet level of the mother-to-be. An abnormal platelet count may suggest complications of pregnancy, and may also be  a contraindication to epidural anesthesia.

Platelets in pregnancy-norms

Platelets are morphotic elements responsible for, among other things. For clotting in the human body. During pregnancy, their number physiologically decreases, but is usually between 150,000 and 450,000. Any abnormalities should be verified and confronted with the clinical picture (e.g., signs of hemorrhagic diathesis or pre-eclampsia) by a gynecologist and a hematologist.

Platelets in pregnancy- too low

We refer to excessively low platelet levels during pregnancy as thrombocytopenia. This is a relatively common condition in moms-to-be. It can have various causes. Sometimes it is called. Thrombocytopenia of pregnancy with a mild course, which is associated with the physiological changes that take place in the body of the mother-to-be. Sometimes, however, thrombocytopenia is a symptom of a serious disease such as HELLP syndrome. Reduced platelet counts are accompanied in this case by elevated liver parameters, hemolytic anemia or elevated blood pressure. For this reason, when platelets in pregnancy are too low, it is always necessary to rule out serious causes of this condition in order to avoid further complications.

Platelets in pregnancy- too high

Excessively high platelet levels during pregnancy are referred to as hyperplasia. This is a less common situation in this period than thrombocytopenia. An elevated platelet count can accompany situations such as infections or iron deficiency. Hyperplasia can also occur in the course of cancer. In the case of a diagnosis of hyperplasia, it is advisable to implement anticoagulant treatment, such as taking low-dose acetylsalicylic acid. In the perinatal period, heparins are recommended due to the fact that the pregnancy and postpartum period is considered prothrombotic, and this could, in combination with hyperplasia, lead to serious complications.

Performing regularly during pregnancy, among other things. Blood counts make it possible to detect any abnormalities early and implement management. In addition to causing complications in pregnancy, an abnormal platelet count can also prevent regional anesthesia during labor.
