Pregnancy is a time when a woman is particularly vulnerable to back pain associated with the increasing size of her abdomen. Since the use of many painkillers during these 9 months is prohibited, it is useful to know which topical preparations are safe. Which pain relief ointment can be used during pregnancy?

Pain relief ointment during pregnancy – effects

An analgesic ointment in its formulation contains a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug in the form of diclofenac or ibuprofen, for example, or an opioid, as is the case with tramadol ointment. The main difference between an ointment and an oral preparation is its topical action. When applied to the area that is the source of pain, the drug is absorbed through the skin and has an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect locally. The mechanism of action of the pain-relieving drug is specific to the preparation contained in the ointment. Gel preparations are mainly used for acute pain, not chronic pain.

Pain ointment during pregnancy – is it safe?

Most preparations classified as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are contraindicated for use during I. and III. trimester. For the first weeks of pregnancy, they significantly increase the risk of miscarriage, as well as the occurrence of heart defects in the fetus. In contrast, the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during III. trimester of pregnancy risks premature closure of the ductus arteriosus, commonly referred to as the Botall’s duct, which ultimately leads to the development of primary pulmonary hypertension in the newborn, a very serious complication. II. The trimester of pregnancy is the safest time to use NSAID drugs, but the benefits must outweigh the potential adverse effects. For this reason, experts also recommend abandoning the use of topical anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs containing substances such as, among others. ibuprofen, diclofenac, ketoprofen or naproxen. This is related to the fact that no studies have ever been conducted on pregnant women and the possible effects of using such preparations. In contrast, it is believed that despite the topical effect, the medicinal substances enter the bloodstream and may have potentially harmful effects on fetal development.

Safe ways to deal with pain during pregnancy

The drug of choice for all kinds of pain in pregnancy is paracetamol. Due to its lack of effect on the developing fetus, it can be used throughout pregnancy. A single dose of paracetamol is 1 gram and can be repeated every 6 hours. Unfortunately, there are currently no ointments on the market that contain paracetamol in their composition, so the use of any preparations in this form during pregnancy is contraindicated.

Safe methods used to reduce pain include non-pharmacological methods such as:

  • Massage
  • Kinesiotaping
  • The use of a relief belt

In the case of intractable back pain, it is a good idea to visit a physiotherapist, who, using methods that are safe for the pregnant woman, will try to alleviate the intractable pain.
