Every pregnant woman has examinations performed in accordance with the current Regulation of the Ministry of Health. During the 2nd. trimester one ultrasound and blood and urine tests every 4 weeks are mandatory. Check out what other tests are mandatory for the 2nd. trimester of pregnancy.

Blood tests mandatory in 2. trimester

During pregnancy, every mother-to-be should have a blood count and a general urine test every four weeks. This is to detect possible abnormalities such as anemia or asymptomatic bacteriuria. Also, in 2. trimester of pregnancy, anti-D antibodies are also tested in women with negative blood type. An IgM antibody test for toxoplasmosis should also be performed if the mother-to-be was negative in the first trimester. These tests are designed to determine the occurrence of serological conflict and toxoplasmosis infection during pregnancy, respectively.

Mandatory research in 2. trimester- ultrasound

One of the compulsory ultrasound examinations during pregnancy is the so-called “pregnancy test. Midterm ultrasound to be performed between 18. a 22. week of pregnancy. Its purpose is to evaluate the fetal organs in detail for birth defects. It also assesses the approximate weight of the fetus and checks the length of the cervix. This is extremely important in terms of the risk of preterm labor, which can be prevented  if the cervix is found to be shortened (25mm or less by the 24th week of pregnancy)

Other compulsory research in 2. trimester

In addition to the mandatory blood tests and ultrasound, in 2. trimester of pregnancy, an OGTT, or oral glucose load test, should be performed. In case the mother-to-be has risk factors for gestational diabetes, it is performed at the beginning of pregnancy. In their absence, it takes place between 24. a 26. week of pregnancy. The test involves drinking a 75 g glucose solution and testing blood glucose 3 times – before drinking the product, one hour and 2 hours after oral ingestion. During this time, a pregnant woman should not leave the clinic. Many women find it difficult to drink the solution, so flavored versions are available. Always determine before testing whether they are available at your facility.
