Pregnant women should keep in mind the list of products forbidden in the refrigerator for moms-to-be. Their consumption can risk developing listeriosis, a zoonotic bacterial disease that poses a particular threat to pregnant women. What symptoms does it give and what is the treatment of listeriosis in pregnancy?

Listeriosis-what kind of disease is it?

Listeriosis is a bacterial zoonotic infectious disease caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Infection occurs through the oral route due to consumption of products containing listeriosis bacilli. Sources of bacteria can include raw meat and cheeses that have not been pasteurized, as well as fish and seafood. Listeria is also transmitted on raw and unwashed fruits and vegetables. That’s why it’s so important to wash them thoroughly before eating, and not to eat raw meat, fish and unpasteurized dairy products throughout pregnancy. Infection can also occur when eating ice cream from popular, especially in seaside resorts, booths that often do not meet the standards imposed by the Sanitary Inspectorate.

Listeriosis in pregnancy- symptoms

Most often listeriosis does not produce symptoms in healthy individuals with properly functioning immune systems. Pregnant women, however, are more likely to develop the full-blown disease due to a weakened immune system. Flu-like symptoms may appear, among others. Fever or bone and joint pain. Gastrointestinal symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea are also quite common. If the disease is suspected, do not delay and go as soon as possible to a doctor who will diagnose listeriosis and implement the appropriate treatment.

Listeriosis in pregnancy- treatment

Due to its bacterial etiology, listeriosis requires antibiotic treatment. Ampicillin or erythromycin is most commonly used for this purpose in pregnancy.

Listeriosis in pregnancy- the danger

Listeriosis most often does not carry complications for the pregnant woman, but can be particularly dangerous for the baby. If infection occurs, preterm labor can occur. In such a situation, the newborn may present symptoms of pneumonia or septicemia, i.e. generalized infection. The child also has skin lesions. His nervous system may also be affected by the disease process. While still pregnant, one of the possible complications of listeriosis is stunted intrauterine development of the fetus and, in the worst case, miscarriage or death of the baby.

Listeriosis in pregnancy-prevention

To avoid listeriosis infection during pregnancy, mothers-to-be should avoid contact with raw meat and unprocessed dairy products. Experts point out not to use a common cutting board for both raw meat and vegetables or fruits. Bacteria die at high temperatures, so it is very important to carefully and properly heat treat products. Vegetables and fruits, on the other hand, should be thoroughly washed before consumption. Thus, the risk of contracting listeriosis during pregnancy will be minimized.
