Many moms-to-be struggle with bothersome symptoms of intimate infections during pregnancy. Untreated infections can carry complications. For this reason, it is important for a pregnant woman to consult her health care provider in case of worrying symptoms. What are the symptoms of intimate infections and what is their treatment?

During pregnancy, the normal functioning of the immune system is disrupted in the body of the mother-to-be. The same is true for intimate infections. Most often in pregnancy they are caused by fungi. Candidiasis is believed to affect up to 40% of pregnant women.

Symptoms of intimate infections in pregnancy

Vaginal secretions often increase during pregnancy. This is a completely physiological symptom. However, if an intimate infection develops, the characteristic symptom is a discharge with an unpleasant odor and a different color than before. It can be grayish, white (cheesy)  or yellow. In addition, in such a situation, expectant mothers also complain of persistent itching or pain when urinating.

Intimate infections in pregnancy- mycoses

Most commonly, intimate infections in pregnancy are caused by fungi. During pregnancy there is an imbalance between the components of the genital microbiota, and this in turn promotes the colonization of the vagina by fungi. Besides, high levels of estrogen and progesterone can also have an immunosuppressive effect and increase the risk of intimate infections. Women who are previous carriers of Candida are more prone to candidiasis.

Other intimate infections in pregnancy

In addition to fungi, intimate infections during pregnancy can also be caused by viruses and bacteria. However, this is much rarer than candidiasis. Most often, the development of a bacterial infection is due to a decrease in the number of lactic acid bacilli in the vagina.

Intimate infections in pregnancy-prevention

Intimate hygiene both in and out of pregnancy is similar. Avoid using washers and sponges, which harbor many microorganisms. Always wipe intimate places in a front-to-back direction (from the vagina to the anus). Moms-to-be should also refrain from wearing underwear made of unnatural artificial materials. The intimate hygiene products used are also important. They should always have a physiological pH so as not to violate the natural protective barrier of the vagina. And don’t forget to eat a healthy and balanced diet on a daily basis. Probiotics to strengthen the physiological bacterial flora are also recommended for recurrent infections.

Intimate infections in pregnancy- treatment

Intimate infections unfortunately tend to recur. For this reason, they should never be underestimated. To diagnose the cause of the infection, in addition to examination with a speculum, a microbiological test, or so-called “microbiology”, is performed. culture. In the case of fungal infections, antifungal treatment is used, while if the symptoms are caused by bacteria, it is necessary to reach for an antibiotic such as metronidazole. Oral or topical treatment is possible, and the gynecologist decides on the choice.

Intimate infections in pregnancy- complications

Most often, intimate infections in pregnancy do not cause serious complications, and the course is mild. However, there are reports related to the possible infection of the baby being in the uterine cavity. It occurs through the placenta or following an amniocentesis. The symptoms of congenital candidiasis in newborns are skin lesions of the head, hands and feet. If there is aspiration of infectious material, the child may develop pneumonia. For this reason, if an intimate infection caused by fungi, for example, is detected, it is necessary for a gynecologist to implement appropriate treatment.
