Constipation in pregnancy is a relatively common ailment. There are many over-the-counter preparations on the market that are designed to provide temporary relief for this type of affliction. Prominent among them include. glycerin suppositories. Can they be safely used during pregnancy?

Glycerin suppositories – mode of action

Glycerin suppositories, as the name suggests, contain glycerin in their composition. It is an agent classified as a fatty. Thanks to its properties, it not only facilitates the movement of fecal masses within the colon and rectum, but also locally irritates the mucosa of the terminal gastrointestinal tract. Due to its mechanism of action and the lack of a medicinal substance in its formulation, glycerin suppositories are considered one of the safest laxatives that can be used virtually without restriction. It is also an over-the-counter preparation.

Glycerin suppositories – are they safe during pregnancy?

Pregnancy is a special time when the use of many drugs and dietary supplements is prohibited due to potential or proven adverse effects on the pregnant woman or the developing fetus. For this reason, before using any preparation, you should consult your gynecologist, who, based on his knowledge and having the full records of the patient in question, will provide answers about the safety of its use.

Glycerin suppositories are regarded as one of the safest ways to deal with constipation. Their use by pregnant women, however, periodically divides the obstetrics community. The vast majority believe that due to the lack of a medicinal substance in its composition and its effect on the mucosa of the large intestine primarily mechanically, glycerin suppositories can be used without concern by pregnant women. Sometimes, however, experts say that stimulating the peristaltic wave in this way can lead to further intestinal contractions, which are not advisable during this period. For this reason, it is necessary to consult your gynecologist before taking them.
