Pregnancy is a period when various unpleasant discomforts can arise. One of the symptoms that expectant mothers complain about is bothersome bloating. For this reason, many pregnant women wonder whether the drug used so far for bloating- Espumisan-can also be safely taken during pregnancy.

What is Espumisan?

Espumisan is an over-the-counter drug. It contains the active ingredient simethicone, which is a silicon compound. Simethicone is a surfactant with no pharmacological activity. Due to its physical properties, it facilitates the bursting of air bubbles in the gastrointestinal tract, and thus abdominal bloating does not occur.

Espumisan during pregnancy-is it allowed?

Very importantly for moms-to-be, the drug is not absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, and is excreted from the body unchanged. For this reason, there is no effect on the fetus or its development. Espumisan can therefore be used by pregnant women. However, if Espumisan would cause any allergic reaction, it should not be taken. If you have any doubts about the use of this drug during pregnancy, it is worth talking to your healthcare provider, who will also suggest other ways to deal with bloating during pregnancy.

Espumisan in pregnancy- indications

Espumisan in pregnancy is used for excessive accumulation of gas in the digestive tract, which manifests itself as abdominal bloating. It is also often recommended before abdominal ultrasound examinations to improve visibility during the examination. It ensures that excessively bloated intestinal loops do not obscure other organs.

Causes of bloating during pregnancy

Flatulence during pregnancy is mostly caused by an improper diet followed by the mom-to-be. Bloating foods, simple sugars or carbonated drinks can cause gas to accumulate in the digestive tract. In addition, during pregnancy there is a tendency to constipation, and thus it is difficult to freely dispose of the resulting gas. In addition, high levels of hormones during pregnancy can slow down digestive processes and intestinal peristalsis. The growing uterus along with the baby can also put pressure on the intestines and contribute to constipation and bloating during pregnancy.

What for bloating during pregnancy?

The best home remedy for bloating during pregnancy is to change your diet. Moms-to-be should avoid eating legumes and brassicas, as well as carbonated beverages. Flatulence can also be caused by eating products containing simple sugars. Eating quietly and regularly is also a good practice that can reduce gas formation. Specialists advise eating more often in such a situation, but it should be smaller portions. Physical activity in the form of walking also has a proven effect on bloating and constipation, and not just during pregnancy.
