Every pregnant woman should have a cytology during pregnancy. Cervical cancer is one of the most common cancers in pregnant women. In addition to cytology, colposcopy is also performed for diagnosis. What does it consist of and is it safe during pregnancy?

Colposcopy in pregnancy-what does it involve?

Colposcopy is a relatively simple test to indicate lesions present on the cervix, vagina or vulva. Under appropriate magnification, the doctor views the surfaces of the vaginal walls and the cervix. It can also use various types of dyes, among others. acetic acid. In case of abnormalities, it is also possible to take a slice from the suspicious lesion.

If the cytology result received by the pregnant woman is ASC-  US, colposcopy can be postponed until 6 weeks after delivery due to the fact that most lesions regress.

Colposcopy in pregnant women is also performed when palpable or macroscopically visible lesions are present on the cervix, as well as when HPV infection or neoplasia is suspected.
