Antibiotics, like other drugs, can be divided into a group of safe and a group of prohibited during pregnancy. In the most common infections, antibiotics from the penicillin group and cephalosporins are resorted to. If possible, drugs with unproven harm to the developing fetus are used first. In exceptional cases, it is necessary to use drugs that can harm the baby, but the risks associated with the use of this type of therapy are less than the benefits that the mother will receive from the inclusion of treatment.

Antibiotics in pregnancy-when to use?

Antibiotics are used during pregnancy for bacterial infections. Most often mothers-to-be take them during urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections- angina or sinusitis. Interestingly, there are situations in which a pregnant woman does not experience any symptoms and still has to take an antibiotic. This is the case with asymptomatic bacteriuria, which exceptionally requires treatment during pregnancy. In addition, antibiotics are used in moms-to-be, among others. In the course of Lyme disease or sexually transmitted diseases. If premature outflow of amniotic fluid (PROM) also occurs, antibiotic therapy is included.

It is worth bearing in mind that antibiotics should not be used on their own. It is also always necessary to take all doses of the drug without terminating the therapy first. To protect yourself from gastrointestinal problems or vaginal fungal infections during antibiotic therapy, it is worth reaching for probiotics-those taken orally and vaginally.

Antibiotics in pregnancy- effect on the baby

There is a large group of antibiotics banned during pregnancy. Among those mentioned are. tetracyclines, which can cause bone growth disorders and tooth discoloration in children, or aminoglycosides leading to the development of deafness in a child. It is also believed that quinolones taken during pregnancy can cause damage to the toddler’s joint cartilage.
